One of the many things I love about my daughter is that she really likes history. I don’t know why, maybe all those nights reading Blood on the River, but history is one of her favorite subjects. Yesterday I called her on the way home and mentioned that I’d just watched a documentary on Henry Ford. “Oh, cool. He used the assembly line so they could make more cars and the price would come down.” Uh, yeah.
So instead of just doing our usual 4th of July shenanigans of eating hotdogs and watching fireworks without much thought to the WHY of the day, we’re starting our morning off with some history regarding the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Those guys, those SIGNERS, they were signing their death warrants.

Of those 56 who signed the Declaration of Independence, nine died of wounds or hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, in each case with brutal treatment. Several lost wives, sons or entire families. One lost his 13 children. Two wives were brutally treated. All were at one time or another the victims of manhunts and driven from their homes. Twelve signers had their homes completely burned. Seventeen lost everything they owned. Yet not one defected or went back on his pledged word. Their honor, and the nation they sacrificed so much to create is still intact.
Wow. I’m too paranoid to sign on-line petitions! This country is a miracle, founded by brave men who weren’t afraid to fight tyranny. We’re going to remember them by reading The Americans Who Risked Everything, spending a few minutes with the Declaration of Independence, and thanking God for His blessing on this great country.
